Known as "heavy soils," these soils are rich in fine clay particles and, while challenging to handle, have the potential to be extremely fertile with proper care.
Clay soils have a higher percentage of fine clay particles than other soil types;
They also take longer to warm up in the spring;
They swell and shrink when they get wet and dry;
They are more easily damaged by digging or walking on;
And they are much less vulnerable to drought than other soil types.
Amazingly, clay particles predominate in soil. The relative sizes of the various soil particles (clay, sand, and silt) provide an explanation for this. Despite the fact that clay particles are little, their large surface area determines the physical characteristics of soil since more of them can fit in a given amount of space (about one centimeter cubed). Sand and silt particles, on the other hand, are larger, requiring fewer particles to fill a space (let's say 1 cm cubed again). Because of this, the total surface area of sand and silt is lower than that of clay particles, making them significantly less significant in influencing the properties of a soil.
