The potting mix is kept loose by the pockets these coarse coconut husk chips generate in it. This promotes drainage and aeration, which are essential for the health of all indoor and tropical plants. The coconut husk absorbs water quickly, wets readily, and releases water gradually.
The chips release water gradually and have a high water-holding capacity. They can be used with other media like sphagnum moss and perlite, or used alone as mulch and potting medium for orchids (including Dendrobium and Oncidium). They form pockets in the potting mix, which are essential for the aeration and drainage that orchids and other tropical plants require for good health. If the chips aren't allowed to dry out entirely, rehydrating them will be simpler regardless of how they're utilized.
